Here at The Sewing Retreat we are cutting away at the fabric of irresponsible textile production, and here's how and why we began...

Production

Everything we sell is organic and complies with the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) & OEKO-TEX Standard.

Some products are also dyed using natural products of the earth.

Those which don’t use natural dyes use low impact dyes that conform to

GOTS/OEKO-TEX standards.

Running the Business

Here at The Sewing Retreat we try and source the best possible organic products from the most reliable sources.

We try to print out as little as possible, but what we do need to print we print on recycled paper.

We recycle everything we can.

Receiving your Goodies

All the packaging you receive is made using 100% recycled materials.

The logo stamp we use on your packaging is made using sustainable friendly products.

We try not to package items unnecessarily and even our tape is eco friendly. So we are plastic-free.

What is Organic Cotton?
Organic cotton is cotton grown using natural methods, therefore no pesticides are used and it has very little, or no impact on the environment. All our organic fabrics are GOTS certified or OEKO-TEX and where possible also Fair Trade certified.

OEKO-TEX

All of our bamboo fabrics are made to the OEKO-TEX certified standard. Bamboo is generally grown without chemicals regardless but the problem comes when the fibre is made into yarn to make the fabric. So all our yarn and dyes for our bamboo fabrics are made without using any harmful chemicals.

About Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
To obtain an ‘organic’ certification level, all standards must be adhered to according to the GOTS. ‘The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognised as the world’s leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibres. It defines high-level environmental criteria along the entire organic textiles supply chain and requires compliance with social criteria as well.’

Why Organic?

  • The textile industry is the number one polluter of water worldwide

  • When pesticides are used to aid the growth of cotton they eventually end up in the groundwater polluting it for drinking, cooking, etc.

  • According to the World Health Organisation, it is estimated that around 20-40,000 people die each year due to water contamination and another 3 million are poisoned by it

  • Farmers lose around 60% of their production budget on chemicals

  • The harsh chemicals eventually mean that the fields are rendered barren

  • Organic production replenishes the nutrients in the soil so the land can always be used and the nutrients will go back into the soil

  • Organic farming techniques are more labour intensive and therefore create new jobs offering better livelihoods
